With the holidays approaching, Wise Property Management, a Tampa condominium association management company has put together a list of holiday safety tips for condominium residents. We know that the holidays can be a hectic time and want to ensure the safety of residents and protect them from potential fire hazards.
INSPECT STRINGED LIGHTS
When hanging holiday lights, whether inside the condo or outside, check for worn out wires, insulation gaps, broken sockets, bends in the wire, and any bare spots. It’s important to never overload any outlets, and to connect the string of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet, to avoid electrical shock. Check with your condo association about where lights are allowed to hang, if they are permitted on windows or porches, or just inside.
KEEP THE HOLIDAY TREE WATERED
If you plan on using a live holiday tree, keep it well watered so it does not dry out. As a Tampa condominium association management company, we suggest that you do not place a holiday tree near a heat source, such as a heat vent.
TEST SMOKE DETECTORS
Test smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors, and if needed, replace their batteries. If a fire occurs in the middle of the night the last thing anyone wants is a smoke alarm that has dead batteries.
BE WEARY OF UNATTENDED CANDLES
Do not leave lit candles unattended, and do not place any candles near a holiday tree. Keep them in an area where they cannot be knocked over, and make sure the candles are in a stable holder. If candles are burned throughout the day in a room, double check that they’ve been blown out at night.
BE MINDFUL OF SPACE HEATERS
Avoid running heater cords under carpets. Keep heaters away from young children, turn them off at night, and never leave them unattended.
